2007 Award Winners

Alright loyal readers, it's time for BHH's 2007 award winners. I tend to try to avoid the obvious winners, so here's who I think should bring home the hardware, not who obviously is. Well, there may be exceptions here and there. On with the awards!

King Clancy Memorial Trophy (Leadership and Humanitarian Contribution), Graham and LuAnn Snyder. For their quest to each NHL city in the U. S., the parents of the late Daniel Snyder deserve the King Clancy trophy for their efforts to raise money in each city for the Daniel Snyder Memorial Fund.

Frank J. Selke Trophy (best defensive forward), Mike Fisher, Ottawa Senators. The gritty center for Ottawa played against teams best lines almost every night and hung in there tough enough to help push the Senators into the playoffs. He also managed to knock in 22 goals of his own.

Lester Patrick Trophy (outstanding service to hockey in the United States), Mike Modano, Dallas Stars. He showed a ton of class after accidentally slicing open Jamie Heward in November, and he showed a complete lack of class after Jordin Tootoo rocked him with a clean hit in March. Either way, Modano became the all-time leading point getter among Americans this year, and this trophy is his reward.

Jack Adams Award (coach of the year), Randy Carlyle, Anaheim Ducks. They soared out to a quick start with a lot of young talent, started to slow down, then got things righted again. This trophy probably belongs more to GM Brian Burke than it does to Carlyle, but there isn’t a trophy for “Best Front Office Blowhard.” A close runner up was Lou Lamoriello who was perfect in regulation this season.

Lady Bing Memorial Trophy (most gentlemanly conduct), Kyle Wellwood, Toronto Maple Leafs. 48 games, zero penalty minutes. That’s not bad, especially for a youngster, the type of players referees love to heap penalties on. Not to mention he also chipped in 12 goals and 30 assists, so it’s not like the officials couldn’t see him because he was invisible.

Calder Memorial Trophy (best rookie), Anze Kopitar, Los Angeles Kings. Malkin and Staal had Crosby. Wolski and Stastny had Sakic. Who did Anze Kopitar have to help him to 20 goals and 61 points? Mike Cammalleri and Alexander Frolov. That’s why he gets the Calder.

James Norris Memorial Trophy (best defenseman), Dan Boyle, Tampa Bay Lightning. Unlike in the past, there’s really 5 d-men that could have won it this year. Nicklas Lidstrom has won it too many times in the past, so he’s out. Scott Neidermeyer had help from Pronger almost all year, so he’s out. Sergei Gonchar is still Sergei Gonchar, so he’s out. That leaves us with Sheldon Souray (a -28 on the year) and Dan Boyle (a -5 on the year). Dan Boyle may have had a quiet year, but the numbers he’s put up in the City of Tampa look like Norris numbers to me.

Vezina Trophy (best goaltender), Martin Brodeur, New Jersey Devils. He’s not the sexy pick that Roberto Luongo seems to be, he’s simply the man that won more games, and stopped more shots than any other goaltender in the league. That sounds like the best in my book.

Hart Memorial Trophy (most valuable player), Joe Thorton, San Jose Sharks. Crosby may have had more points, but Thorton was the most complete player in the league this year. Jonathan Cheechoo struggling? No problem, here’s a couple of other guys no one has ever heard of before in Ryan Clowe and Milan Michalek to help knock the pucks in. The ability to make somebody out nobodys helps put Thorton over the top.

Typical, classy biased, naive Caps fan.
Yep, Malking doesn't deserve it despite leading all rookies in goals.

Crosby leading his team with inconsistent wingers to the playoffs doesn't deserve the Hart.
I suppose he also doesn't deserve the Art Ross either because he's a Penguin?

This is why nobody respects the Caps and their two fans.
They don't know the game, and have no appreciation for talent.
Just naive 10 year old hatred and jealously.

I suppose if AO had 3/4 as good a year as Crosby he'd deserve the MVP.

Sigh.

"Frank J. Selke Trophy (best defensive forward), Mike Fisher, Ottawa Senators. The gritty center for Ottawa played against teams best lines almost every night and hung in there tough enough to help push the Senators into the playoffs. He also managed to knock in 22 goals of his own."

A decent choice, but Schubert > Fischer. The guy has a better defensive game than Fischer, which is what the award is handed out for.

"Jack Adams Award (coach of the year), Randy Carlyle, Anaheim Ducks. They soared out to a quick start with a lot of young talent, started to slow down, then got things righted again. This trophy probably belongs more to GM Brian Burke than it does to Carlyle, but there isn't a trophy for Best Front Office Blowhard. A close runner up was Lou Lamoriello who was perfect in regulation this season."

One name: Lindy Ruff. The guy got robbed of it last year, and he shouldn't get robbed of it again.

"Calder Memorial Trophy (best rookie), Anze Kopitar, Los Angeles Kings. Malkin and Staal had Crosby. Wolski and Stastny had Sakic. Who did Anze Kopitar have to help him to 20 goals and 61 points? Mike Cammalleri and Alexander Frolov. That's why he gets the Calder."

You left Brown out, who is arguably much better than Frolov. This is just bullshit, even if Geno didn't have a the season expected of him.

"James Norris Memorial Trophy (best defenseman), Dan Boyle, Tampa Bay Lightning. Unlike in the past, there's really 5 d-men that could have won it this year. Nicklas Lidstrom has won it too many times in the past, so he's out. Scott Neidermeyer had help from Pronger almost all year, so he's out. Sergei Gonchar is still Sergei Gonchar, so he's out. That leaves us with Sheldon Souray (a -28 on the year) and Dan Boyle (a -5 on the year). Dan Boyle may have had a quiet year, but the numbers he's put up in the City of Tampa look like Norris numbers to me."

Yes, they're not gonna give it to Lidstrom because he's won it too many times. lol Neidermeyer or Lidstrom are the hands down competition. I'd give it to Neidermeyer, because I think he's better than Lidstrom in all aspects. But you gotta be high to think Dan Boyle is anywhere near as deserving as either of those two.

"Hart Memorial Trophy (most valuable player), Joe Thorton, San Jose Sharks. Crosby may have had more points, but Thorton was the most complete player in the league this year. Jonathan Cheechoo struggling? No problem, here's a couple of other guys no one has ever heard of before in Ryan Clowe and Milan Michalek to help knock the pucks in. The ability to make somebody out nobodys helps put Thorton over the top."

Only thing is Michalek wasn't put on the Thornton line until Wilson saw he was the standout on the Heavyweight Line. Michalek is 10 times more talented than any winger on the Penguins. Ryan Clowe spent most of the time on the 2nd and 3rd lines, because of the promotion of Michalek. The one guy I will give him is Joe Pavelski. Not to take anything away from Thornton, because he obviously is the 2nd best playmaker in the league, but taking into consideration Sid is years younger than him, already racking up more points, set the difference. Big Joe is also probably the only one who hates to shoot more than Sid.

So Lidstrom having won multiple Norris trophies in the past is being used against him? Lou is an Adams finalist? He coached his team for a week or two. Also, the Calder is awarded to 'best rookie', 'not best rookie given this, this and that'. Maybe Kopitar would have outscored Malkin were he healthy and were he on the Pens. Then again, maybe not. Thankfully, this is not left in your hands, and I have faith those involved in the voting are reasonable enough to not factor all this hypothetical stuff into their voting. Malkin was the best this season. Doesn't matter who he was playing with on the power play. Doesn't mean Kopitar's chopped liver. Malkin was just the best rookie.

You don't really come off as someone who knows what they are talking about.

It's obvious this list has no credibility for many things, but primarily this quote --

"Nicklas Lidstrom has won it too many times in the past, so he's out."

I rest my case.

You might want to re-examine you Adams candidates. To win, the coach typically has to coach more than 4 games.

I am sure the candidacy of Lou was 100% serious. People need a sense of humor.

The Comment about Lou for Jack Adams was intended to be a joke. This is a humor column. As far as Lidstrom, if you look back at the initial post, I made it clear I would be avoiding giving the trophies to the favorites. That means no Norris for Lidstrom, no Jack Adams for Ruff, and no Hart for Crosby.

Also, in bashing Caps fans and getting outraged over this, the Pens fans have fulfilled their sterotype, and who doesn't like seeing that happen.

Anonymous said...

Bash our players ignorantly and you'll get a dose of the truth.
Who doesn't like seeing a Caps fan being put in their place, the floor?

FS said...

Where did I bash any Penguins players?

Anonymous said...

Pens fans are paranoid. So is Crosby not able to golf yet because of his broken foot?

Anonymous said...

"This is a humor column."

Really?

I always thought of this blog as being unintentionally funny.

Caps fans are still bitter over the Pens getting Crosby.

They thought it was there God given right to have the same conditions for the lottery apply for '05 that applied in '04 thus giving them a good chance to get back to back #1's; didn't happen.

They got pissy when it was basically ruled to be anybody's pick, then they collectively crapped their pants when the #1 pick went to Pitt.

Now that Crosby is looking like he'll be a more complete player than Ovechkin, the bitterness has gotten worse.

Pens fans live in some dream world that thinks everything revoles around them.

If the majority weren't such bandwagoners they would understand that the Caps/Pens rivarly was there long before AO and Crosby arrived.

Get over yourself, and not believe it or not not everyone covets Crosby.

Not only is this blog a joke and obviously created by a teenager who knows nothing about hockey.
If you really want to see a big joke..
Go on the official capitals discussion board and see the way he rides teams.
This years team is the New Jersey Devils... This little teen "FS" has adapted a new team.
I am not sure if it is a homosexual feeling he had for Marty or maybe he is trying to impress a girl.... but he is trying to claim that Devil hockey is very exciting.
If it was who you felt then sure it would be respectable.. but you jump on teams and ride them.
Just out of curiousity.. who are you going to ride next when Ottawa sends them golfing in the next few games?

Anonymous said...

Your grammar and your accusations obviously reveal how old you are.

Anonymous said...

Only the Caps fans view this as a rivalry.
Pens fans, and for that matter most of the NHL, don't take Caps fans or the team seriously.
Our rival is PHI, I just hate the Caps more because of the two fans they have, people like the author of this blog make you wanna throw up.
It's dislike for the fans not so much them being a rival.

Caps fans have an inferiority complex, they think PIT, PHI, and NYR are all rivals when really none of them are, they just are one of the many teams which invade DC because...well the Caps have no fans, never have or will.
Caps fans just need to get over it an accept it.
