Season Preview: Milan Jurcina
Milan Jurcina came over towards the end of last season in a trade with Boston that was little more than highway robbery.In exchange for a 3rd round pick, the Caps got a defenseman that can play as a 4th defenseman on a solid club, or a 2nd defenseman on a bad club. Or a 6th defenseman on Anaheim, but that's not realistic.
Boston wanted Jurcina to be a puck-moving defenseman, but he didn't fit that role very well, and Washington seems to be successful in allowing him to be the physical d-man he can be. He'll most likely end up on the second pairing this year, and while he may be a stay-at-home defenseman, he's shown that he has a rocket from the point and isn't afraid to occasionally step up in the offensive zone.

Ask FS! 2/8/07
Welcome back loyal readers! It's time once again for the column that keeps on truckin', Ask FS! Today's question floats in from the Peerless who wonders,
After the Treaty of Utrecht ended the War for Spanish Succession in 1713, the Austrian Empire became the reigning hegemon over the Italian peninsula. Under the Hapsburg emperors, the Austrian Empire gained control over large portions of northern Italy by annexing the the Kingdoms of Venice and Genoa. During the time the Hapsburgs controlled the northern Italian states, they also controlled the Slavic areas that are now the Czech Republic and Slovakia. During this time, cultural diffusion lead to a mingling of the areas all under the Hapsburg empire at the time. As a result, there is a large influence of Northern Italy in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. I hope this history lesson has been helpful Peerless!
And for the record, I looked none of that up. It helps sometime to have a degree in History.

Welcome back loyal readers, it's time once again for the online column that always stares directly at the sun, Ask FS! Today's question comes from Nolan in Baton Rogue. Nolan wonders,
Do not whine Caps fans, for George McPhee has made the move that is guaranteed to lead the team to the promised land, acquiring Milan Jurcina from the Boston Bruins for a conditional draft pick in 2008. Shoot, we'll already have 2 Stanley Cups by the time that. God bless our genius GM for saving the season. Now let's beat the Pens. Jurcina with four goals by the end of the first period!
What do you think the Caps are missing from being a playoff team?Thanks for the question Nolan! For those living under a rock, the Caps were in playoff contention all the way through Christmas. Since Christmas, the injury bug, the flu bug, and the not playing all that well bug have completely destroyed any realistic likelihood the Caps had at making the playoffs. But for those who have not heard. SALVATION IS HERE!
